I created this work during the Pandemic, as a way of coping with the new extraordinary circumstances. The red thread throughout my work has always been the theme of duality between freedom and confinement, so the experience of being physically confined to my apartment had a profound impact on my artistic process.
I decided to capture the experience, like I had done before in my Series Between Windows and Bound in Blue, where I embody emotions and capture them photographically as a performance or self portrait. I photographed myself embodying the essence of that moment: A moment of deep inquiry and reflection while isolating in a confined space.
I created an acrylic cube to describe the space, added a mirror on the inside of the object and pasted the photograph opposite to the mirror which reflects the figure with crossed arms looking up, looking out to the opening of the confined space. Looking up as a gesture of inquiry and prayer at the same time. During this time I was confronted to be with myself and to look into a mirror with a raw and honest lens. The one thing that makes us resilient is faith and embracing who we really are.
